It's all white

It's all white, floor to ceiling  Moving to our new beach house has been an exciting journey. We finally got to live in our dream location, but were faced with the real challenge of it not being our dream home. The house is a 100-year-old beach bach small, dark and sandwiched in-between the neighboring houses in Lyall Bay, Wellington, New Zealand. Our creative vision for the kitchen and living room renovation was to open it up as much as possible, create light reflecting surfaces to produce an optical illusion of a bigger, lighter and airy space. I actively used every tip in a previous blog post of 'how to make a room look bigger'  to make the best use of our limited space. With our design aesthetic we have tried to respect the history of the house and bring it into the future with an eclectic vibe that combines the old and new, the retro with the modern that works together in a symbiotic and aesthetically pleasing way. Our brief and mood board had three key ideas Beach...

The faux show

Fur throw over bed end - pic by favim.com I am in love with faux fur!  Sometimes I get a really strong sense for a trend and after styling a shoot recently I had that 'I want it' moment with faux fur.  It was a fur stole to be exact but the model happened to be wearing a vintage dress of mine for this particular shot and that dress combined with the photographers 'prop' - a faux fur stole just took it to a whole other level. so I've been in love with the idea of faux fur ever since.  So much so that I've dedicated this whole post to it! Fur capelet by kollabora.com Faux fur in an interior sense (or faux anything) is always hard to get right as it can come off looking too fake or just plain inappropriate for the setting.  I think the key to getting above this wee challenge in any case is always to go for quality and that doesn't necessarily mean spending exorbitant prices from a high-end boutique but merely thinking outside the box, looking in secondhand sto...

Outfit pic: By  Lindsay Keats  - Top from thrift shop, jeans from Dotti , handbag from David Lawrence Interior pic: Courtesy of Deluxe Arch Okay, so I wasn't actually around in the 70s but if I was (and in my 20s let's say) I'd be a happy girl. Al Green's Let's stay together, Marvin Gaye's Let's get it on...Ooh and for a retro style refresher check out these 70s fashion icons  (p.s Diane Keaton I love you). Farrah Fawcett image from andamasha.blogspot.com So obviously we had to come up with our own 70s inspired looks.  Check out AnnaLynne McCord's take on this amazing era and then of course the lovely Mere shows off her 70's side with classic bell bottoms, micro florals and tan accents AnnaLynne McCord image from denimology.com Though you can't see them we also had some chunky platforms helping to give height to a wide flare.  Which by the way is a good tip for those who are a little on the short side and want to still be able to wear a wide leg ...

Mad Men

Outfit pic: By Lindsay Keats - Dress from ASOS , Shoes from Mollini Interior pic: courtesy of   Home to Decor I work in an ad agency so I have a particular fascination and love for the TV show Mad Men . I also love the fashion silhouettes from this era, very feminine dresses in flattering shapes. The retro and sophisticated style from this show can positively influence your home decor and fashion style. We had fun taking this shot, a bit of silliness pretending to be a 60s housewife with an unplugged iron! A few retro pieces will give you that great 60s vibe while still being modern and relevant. Try a retro 60s style chair, sofa, artwork, or lamp. Betty, Joan and Peggy from Mad Men Joan is my favorite female character in the show. She knows everything, is the go to problem solver in the office and always looks flawless.
